Yes, I realize that there are a lot of teenagers and college students on here, and I also realize that almost every single one of them has a job... then there is me :(
NO MATTER WHERE I APPLY
I NEVER GET A FUCKING REPLY
Okay, there was one place that I had a perfect shot at (third place) but one of my friends cock-blocked me when the manager asked whether or not he should hire me...
"Should I hire him?"
"No, I wouldn't trust him."
I have applied at/to over thirty different places (If it is in the Wichita area, I've probably applied or at least asked...
To be honest, I'm starting to wonder what it is about me that employers don't really like...
Is it because I'm not 18? (Hint: it's not)
Is it because I go to a nice school?
Is it because my parents bought a nice car and let me drive it?
Is it because I'm not a complete suck up and actually know what to do?
Is it because I'm not your typical teenager?
I just don't know what to do anymore...
SEMA Sportwagen to keep it relevant time-wise...

I don't have a job currently. Couple of my friends have been looking but it's been hard for them too. Part of the reason I'm not *actively* looking. Yeah money would be nice, especially when I get a car, but I just don't want to work right now. I'm 16 btw/

Older person secret time. Shamelessly use adults: your parents/guardians, teachers, coaches, relatives, church members, religious leader, so on. Don't be afraid to volunteer either. I met a bunch of girls doing Habitat as a teen and it looks awesome on your college apps. Later on one of the other volunteers got me a very cool office job at an artist's colony.

I know how that feels. It sucks. Question. Have you had a job before? If not, it could be your lack of job history that is keeping people from hiring you. Sucks, but it could be true. In my previous job I was in charge of hiring and training new employees. 9/10 times I would choose the person with some work experience over somebody without any at all.

If you're receiving immediate denials or not hearing back from companies at all, I would take a hard look at your resume. This is the first thing an employer sees of you, so it takes the place of your first impression. Always with a resume have somebody that is non-biased take a look at it. You need to be given an honest and fair critique of your resume so that you can make meaningful changes to it if necessary.
I would also check to make sure you are applying for positions in the correct manor. This can be different for each company, but usually instructions are provided on how the company likes to receive applications. Whether that's dropping off a resume in person, applying online etc. If you apply in a manor the company doesn't approve of, you're pretty much guaranteed to have your resume immediately thrown out.
If there are people you are using as sources that are telling employers you are not trust worthy, you need to do two things.
1. Discuss with that person what has transpired to cause that type of review of your character. This can be difficult because it means taking an honest look at yourself. If there are legitimate reasons this person is giving, you need to fix those, because it keeps you from being employable.
2. If the person above is simply doing this out of malice, they are not your friend firstly and secondly should not be provided as a reference.
Speaking on references, don't use only family and friends. You need to provide people you have worked closely with on projects or other jobs. Bosses, instructors, even a trusted lab partner or such would be good. It's okay to use friends and family, but they shouldn't be the only references you provide. Make sure that the people are you placing as references on your resume know they are a reference and could receive a call or e-mail
My final piece of advice is to be honest with yourself about what you're applying for. It doesn't hurt to shoot for the stars in the hopes of landing a great job, but if that's all you're doing it can be detrimental to get nothing but denials. By honest with yourself about your skills and what types of positions you'd be qualified for. On job listings they usually post requirements and needed experience. If you can't cover those items, expect to be looked over.
Whatever you do, don't stop putting yourself out there though! Numbers are still your best ally!

Also make sure you're applying online, updated info, and if all else fails just lie. Seriously. If you're trying to get into an entry job just for experience while at school I seriously doubt they'll contact your "old employer". You worked at your uncle's shop over the summer in some foreign state in charge of stocking parts- hell it could be a car shop and you were in charge of inventorying parts. Do something you're familiar with.
I've held like 7 different positions and the closest anyone has gotten to contacting my previous employer was "what would your old boss say about you?". So fuggit. Lie. Get the job. Get paid. Stuff some singles in a strippers buttcrack.

I think your problem could be mentioning you're going to school. Most of those places have a high turnover rate. The last thing a manager is going to want to do is fill out new hire paperwork (it's a lot of work), pay for a background check, and train someone they know 100% isn't going to be there long. Sad to say but those types of places are looking for long timers. People who lack ambition if you will. Nothing wrong with a little fib.
Also big corporations spend a lot of money on online application systems to automatically score and weed out candidates (so a real person doesn't have to). It could be the that the software is not even sending your application anywhere, and giving you an automatic reply. "Thanks for your interest, blah blah blah." You cut grass? No you ran your own landscape business for the last 2 years. You see where I'm going.

i had a hard time getting a job. it was at the lowest point of our latest economic shit show. I spent about 3 weeks calling around 20 places a day. It ended up being a little over 300 calls. I got 5 maybes 1 interview. So thats a 1.6% maybe and .3% interview. Many of these places are probably saturated with resumes. I heard of places getting anywhere from 20-500 resumes per position. how old are you? do you have any specific training? what do you like to do? I ended up getting a part time job by seeing the place's truck on the highway and calling them after checking out thier website. while on lunch brake I happened to see another place accorss the street and walked in and dropped off my resume. I got an interview the next day. they thought I had guts to just walk in there. some places hate that some love it. A month later I was hired full time

Perhaps see if any of the folks you have volunteered for know of any openings anywhere...you never know who people might know. These folks will know your work ethic and are usually happy to provide a reference or introduction for you. People who know you personally are usually the best ones to ask for this type of thing.
Utilize your network to try and gain leverage where you have none. After I graduated college, I had a dream of moving west, but finding a job was difficult because I was not there to interview, and I quickly realized that it was harder than I thought. So I began letting folks know I wanted to move west. About 18 months after "settling" for a job I didn't want or like, I received a call from an old neighbor who was living in California. He had heard thru the grapevine that I was looking to move, and his company had an opening. Flew out there for an interview and 2 weeks later I started the job.
Obviously your situation is different, but the gist is the same. Best of luck to you!

In the applications you've submitted, have you included personal references? Have you also provided a way for these potential employers to contact whoever was your supervisor/boss during the various volunteer jobs? It may seem weird, but some places really do check in and call previous employers. I know I did. There were a handful of people whose applications I threw in the trash because their previous employers didn't have anything positive to say about them.
Call your previous bosses and personally ask them if you can put them down as a reference. If they liked you and you demonstrated to them that you do quality work, they should be more than happy to provide a rock solid recommendation for you. That can be a big help in getting hired.

I, too, have applied to all of those places, and I have a stunning resume for someone who's never had a job before. Tons of leadership and community experience, technical experience and clubs, 4-H, BEST Robotics, etc. as well as a respectable high school GPA of 3.3 weighted and getting a 30 on the ACT and graduating with honors.
NOTHING.

Let me tell you a story:
I'm 18 (nearly 19) with a pretty decent track record. No criminal convictions, never slipped to "the wrong side". I was homeschooled, then online high school, then real high school where I took the ACT, got 30, and a GPA of 3.3 which let me graduate with honors. While in school I was on the BEST Robotics team, president for a year. I did the Technology Student Association and was an officer for a year. I did 4-H for 12 or 13 years, and was president of my local club for a year. My resume, after posting on Reddit, the only criticism was that I was playing hard-and-fast with my margins, and I accidentally put my address twice.
Social networks? I use false last names and keep them private. Nothing incriminating to be found by googling me.
And yet...
I've applied at uncountable locations (yes, I finally succumbed and applied to fucking WalMart) over the past year and have gotten a call back from... one. One of them. Which then had to reschedule my interview and then CANCEL my interview because they were "no longer hiring" all of a sudden after giving my hopes up for a MONTH.
I recently did another round of applying. Best Buy, Autozone, O'reilly's, Target, etc. etc. Nothing.
To make matters worse, I have a foot/leg/ankle condition that makes standing for longer than 30 minutes extraordinarily painful for me, knocking out a DAMN GOOD portion of jobs right there.
Add to that the already-shitty job market and the fact that there is an almost unlimited supply of better-qualified (Read: more experience flipping burgers) applicants out there, and we're basically Grade-A Fucked.
Which sucks, because I need a job to buy a new car.

Go! 95% are terrible. Go with a group, bring like $40 in singles just for kicks. But the most fun you'll have is watching the patrons. Its the best worst entertainment available.

I got call backs from my first 3 applications (Best Buy, GKI Groundskeepers, Red Robin) but I didn't have the experience for Best Buy, GKI had some returning guys (which sucked, because the owner REALLY liked my track record and said he definitely would've hire me :( and at Red Robin my best friend royally fucked me over...
The issue with having a good ACT and GPA is that they know you won't be with them forever and that you won't be manipulated like a sheep...

walk into a dealership and ask to talk to service manager. tell him how you feel about cars and you'd like to turn that passion into something that gets you money which in return you'll probably spend back on cars (you can leave that last part out or make the joke which may lighted the mood a little) you could either start doing oil changes or maybe order the parts using the computer. what ever gets you started.
This is your first job so don;t walk in there thinking you own the place and you should be manager. Your the new O.B. (office bitch) and remember that. the people who are dropping out are getting the shit jobs cuz thats all they can get and the people hiring know that. You on the other hand, don't sound like and idiot and won't stay long at a shit job. you'll bounce once a good opportunity comes along, something that wont happen to the drop-out. I was told many times that I was over qualified for jobs and they wouldn't hire me because of that even tho I would just emptied trash cans if it meant a paycheck.

EXACTLY!!!! Total, I think my record was something like 10 Wins and 22 Losses over 3 years :( (Partners didn't know what they were doing/didn't bother preparing)
I didn't do it this year because the coach is a frickin' Nazi when it comes to research and I didn't feel like spending an hour per day listening to him drone on about whales and such (I think that's this year's topic?)

CCC works at performance bicycle. My brother works there, they wont hire anybody this time of year, and the management is a bit disorganized. But come spring, I'd definitely apply there, its a fun job

I'm in the same boat. Not only do I have no work experience (because, you know, high school student and all) but I've got a rather severe stutter. Most potential employers deduce that stutter = mental retardation and politely look for any reason to deny me. The ones that DO understand it still don't hire me, because who the hell wants a stutterer (who, on bad days, is a functional mute) dealing with customers?

I've been applying for 2 months. Just got a call back after being fucked over by a gov background check that the employer screwed up. Hopefully I'll be making burritos at Chipotle, interview wednesday. Keep going at it you'll get one

I was you at the beginning of last summer—under 18, only had a wee bit of experience from a couple past temp jobs, and had applied everywhere. I was getting discouraged when, boom, I get a call from not just a potential employer, but rather my ideal potential employer. The old delivery driver quit very hurriedly, so the manager picked up my hopeless application (I was honestly under-qualified for this job) and hooked me up.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is hope for people like you in the form of dumb luck. You may not have gotten responses from the places you applied yet , but with the flip of switch you could be game (I think I eventually got offers from two other places even after I started at the aforementioned job). And like others are saying, keep applying; that's literally all you can.
Also, have you been doing callbacks? It always feel awkward but that's the customary way to let the management know you're determined. Hell, even go in in person and ask about your application. I've done this before and they say, "oh, the manager's not here right now but I'll leave a note on your application saying you came in." It looks good.

Keep your chin up. When I graduated college... It took 278 job applications and resumes sent out, to get my first position. My second position, a year later, I put in four applications, got four interviews and took the best one.
Stepping back to high school... This may not sound appealing, but I worked in a nursing home, taking care of the elderly from the time I was 16, until I moved off for college. Good experience, but very, very hard, emotionally-demanding work. Still, that may be an option for you.

But you're applying for jobs that want dropouts. People that might be stuck there with no other options. I'm not saying pretend to be a dropout, be if they get the feeling you'll not going to last long they will throw your application out. I worked at Wendy's one summer when I was 18. You learn what they are looking for. Had they not been desperate at the time they wouldn't have hired me. I told the manager before he hired me I would be quiting once school started again.

Even if they don't have a place to throw it in, try and see if you can find the contact info of whoever is in charge of hiring that position and send it directly to them. Then at the end add that you're going to call them at a certain time within the next week (be specific) just to ask them questions about the job and such. Then once on the phone talk to them and try and set up a face to face meeting. It usually works.

helped dad file taxes? Internship at tax firm, unpayed.
My brother worked at a company that required you to graduate high school before he had graduated, since he was in college technically.

you lost me with getting murdered by coworkers? its an automotive job? what are you scared of? I have been around the automotive industry my whole life, as well as motorcycle, independent Harley shops, & biker scene my whole life.
people wont hire me as a rule, because they want to judge me on my looks, have you done something with your looks? for example my beard is in excess of 1 foot long, my hair is 3/4 down my back, & I look like someone you dont want to cross, & thats very true. however I have 19 assorted degrees & diplomas,
my primary job would never hire me, except I was hired before they had all the rules in place, people have to agree to be clean cut, beards close or clean shaven, lol, I have been employed with them close to 30 years, & burned out, but cant find a job that will pay me anywhere close to what I make now. I cant get into mangement at my job, basically because I have been me my whole life & hassled upper management, so no way to get pomoted, they say they are looking for people more qualified. & I told them point blank bullshit, they just want young college kids to brainwash, not someone that actually knows whats going on & that has stood them down.
I work a second job, doing mechanic work, & welding fabrication work, the owner of shop is a very close friend, & hollers at me as needed for mechanic work & most of the fabrication & all the welding that shows up, as well as some of the body work, while a real welding place wont even consider me, I guess my hair is a fire hazzard, but I have had long beards & hair for 30+ years.
anyway have you looked online for jobs doing merchandising in your area? & I am serious, I can explain the ins & outs, but its what my wife does. & I also do to help her out on big projects, to bring more cash in from time to time.

Are you following up with these places or do you just apply and wait to hear back? Get ready for stores to start hiring seasonal help soon. Clothing stores usually need people for the holidays because shoppers love to trash clothing departments.

I was *mostly* joking...
*one of my dad's friends was actually threatened by a Jiffy Lube employee... ex-felon on parole, guy was covered in tats and threatened my dad's friend when he came in for a refund because of a stripped oil pan screw.
I don't profile people (most of time, when I do, it's people with Bieber hair, huehuehue)
I'm trying, it just is SO overwhelming to find places that will actually take someone with no work experience who will be leaving in 6 months...
